202. Fundraisers 7 and 8

Parrottee Beach 2,
Acrylic and pencil on 3mm gessoed board, 4" x 4"

Negril,
Acrylic and pencil on 3mm gessoed board, 4" x 4"

Here are the final two tiles; I also submitted a 9.5" x 12" pastel painting of this beach that sold. I painted it back in September.

If I concentrate really, really hard, I can pretend this is the view outside my bedroom window. No, it's not; it's foggy!  :)))

201. Fundraisers 5 and 6

Seven Mile Beach,
Acrylic and pencil on 3mm gessoed board, 4" x 4"

Parrottee Beach 1
Acrylic and pencil on 3mm gessoed board, 4" x 4"

Yep, you were right!  The theme was either going to be the beach or trees… or both, wasn't it?! I also painted this set of four tiles for the fundraising event; two of which are here and two of which I've scheduled for tomorrow's post. There are no ink sketches to go with them as I just drew the faintest outlines before painting on top. I never tire of painting Jamaica - it's just unbelievable that somewhere looks like that all year round. Interestingly, when the hurricanes come, although the leaves may fly off, the palm trees simply bend down; they don't break. There's a moral in there somewhere!

Happy Monday my dear blog friends. xx

So,  there are my four cups and teacups tiles.  In the next post, I'll show you my final four tiles. Can you guess the theme I chose??

199. Fundraiser 2

Acrylic and Unipin 0.05 pen on 3mm gessoed board, 4" x 4"
(Now showing the painted fruit stalks!)

Acrylic and Unipin 0.05 pen on 3mm gessoed board, 4" x 4"

I've been gift-wrapping the 14 sold pieces. This one has been sold and I've just noticed that the photograph above was taken before I'd rectified the colour of the fruit stalks - Ooops!! I need to re-photograph the amended tile before handing it over then re-post.

198. Fundraiser 1

Acrylic and Unipin 0.05 pen on 3mm gessoed board, 4" x 4"

Unipin 0.05 pen on 3mm gessoed board, 4" x 4"

We were asked to submit tiles to a charity fundraiser which could be used as coasters or mounted or whatever. I completed eight and two friends did four each giving us sixteen. We adhered them to felt so that, if they were to be used as coasters, they would not scratch any surface and would be wipe-clean. I'll post them over the next few days and also show you a photo of them together in a group. (The untrimmed felt in the background gave me something to hold onto without touching the painted tile.)

Memories of Supertramp because 'it's raining again'….!

92. Happy Easter!

Acrylic and emulsion on lining paper, 8ft x 20ft

Four of our team walked around adding heavenly bodies to each strip.
Black emulsion then acrylic colours with white emulsion 240cm x 56cm (x10)...

… Meanwhile, I started squaring up a small web image on a large scale.
6B pencil on lining paper (masking tape)

Two artists added three tones then I painted the outline.

Fourth tone and test background added by me

Blue and green oceans painted entirely with Bernice's fingers and palms.
Clever!  :)
Acrylic and emulsion

Initial hanging before sealing edges with double-sided tape.

Somebody's tired!

Checking relationships.

Fingers cut to fit world before I took the latter home to paint the countries
and the theme for the weekend.

Some tracing and some drawing. I didn't enjoy the tracing at all!
Ooops! I forgot Trinidad and Tobago; sorry peeps!
Careful not to ruin B's lovely paintwork.

Ready for Good Friday evening and the
Easter Sunday Celebration: 'Hope for the World'

Happy Easter everyone!

73. Still Life - WIP

Work in progress, still life, acrylic paint on acrylic paper, 20" x 16"

Hi Everyone, this is what I worked on at Christine's workshop last Saturday. I cropped the last photograph as the background cloth is only partly done and, with the patterns unfinished, is a bit of a distraction. I enjoyed doing it but have had to abandon it and return to a commission I'm doing.

Initial stage - drawing with very watery Burnt Siena and Phthalocyanine Blue.

Second stage - adding watered-down Quinacridone Magenta and Ultramarine Blue.

Third stage - thicker paint (temporarily cropped photograph).

There is a lot more to be done such as correcting and softening the edges of the vase and the background cloth, warming the colour of the vase, defining the cloth around the base of the foremost glass bottle so it is clear, adding a starfish in front of the shell, etc. However, I'm happy with the rendering of the glass bottles so will try to leave that part alone!

49. Mini Master - Still Life, Pitcher and Fruit

Acrylic on Saunders CP watercolour paper, 3" x 2"

Here is another 'mini master'; this one is Still Life, Pitcher and Fruit by Paul Cezanne, painted in 1894.  I thoroughly enjoyed painting it and discovered quite a few things that I had missed just looking at the painting over the years, such as the difference in temperature in the colours in the foreground compared to the background and the way he unified all the warm and cool colours in the pitcher.  Great fun!  I hope you are all having a good weekend.

48. Mini Master - On the Beach

Acrylic on watercolour paper, 3" x 2"

This is one of my 'mini masters'; it is Edouard Manet's On the Beach, which he painted in 1873.  (In my Sketchbook Scribbles, I accidentally titled it 'At the Beach'.)  I was surprised that it was taking me as long to do as if it had been larger but realised that it was because I was trying to get it as accurate as possible because it's a fairly well-known painting. The frame itself is 8" x 6"; had I stuck to the correct ratio of the frame, the long side of the painting would have had to have been about 2.5" but instead I stuck to the ratio of the original Manet painting - I think I got away with it.

(The beady-eyed amongst you will notice that I've re-posted the image.  This is because I clean forgot to acknowledge Manet in the first photograph.)

33. The Coast on Coasters

Seascapes, acrylic, 4" x 4"

This is a set of coasters that I painted for a good friend's birthday as he never has anywhere to put his coffee mug!  :)

The images (clockwise) are: Bluefields, Frenchman's Cove in Portland, the view from the restaurant at Idlers' Beach Hotel in Parrottee (that's my nephew down on the beach).

32. Stable Surrounds

These images from my sketchbooks are some of the artwork we did at our July workshop.  They are all views looking in various directions while standing at the door of the studio.  The colour study is of an old greenhouse in the distance.

31. Painting of a Man

Acrylic paint on acrylic primed paper, 20" x 16".

A painting from a resource photo in Paul Strand's book (which was loaned to our workshop).  I have made the gentleman look a bit cantankerous so will be softening his eyebrow area!  I also need to finish his beard.

Christine's Pestle and Mortar

This is an acrylic painting by Hertfordshire artist, Christine Spence, done on Pebeo canvas board. It's either 30x30 or 40x40.

Once a month or so, a few of us meet together in Essendon for an art workshop with her.  Essentially, it is a watercolour workshop but she covers everything from design, composition and drawing through to painting.  Throughout the year, she covers dry media (pencil, charcoal, pastels, etc.) and wet media (watercolour, inks, acrylic, oils, etc.) as well as concepts and techniques.  She runs three-day summer schools each year which allows you to immerse yourself in art for three solid days. (Warning: includes homework! LOL!)

I first joined the group about 15 years ago, although I had a four-year gap due to a job that required me to work every Saturday.  Some have attended even longer than I have but new faces are always welcome.  Although we work hard (as it's a workshop, rather than an art club), her studio at Flint Stable has become a monthly sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of life!  Thanks Christine!

(Yep! That was an unashamed plug for our teacher!  Hope you don't mind.)
