223. Violinist 3

Schmincke and Unison Soft Pastels plus Charcoal
on Daler Rowney Murano paper, 16" X 12"

This is the final figure drawing I did (before drawing the still life set up) and, this time, I waited for her to start a new piece of music then quickly started sketching her.

222. Violinist 1 and 2 plus a 'Shout out' for USK

The Pastel Society had their annual Art Evening at the Mall Galleries this week and, almost at the last minute, I ordered a ticket and went along - last year, they had a classical guitarist but I spent the evening drawing Kimono instead. (See post 121 or click the 'Kimono' label.)

This year, the musician was a frantic (but oh my goodness, so skilled) violinist and there was another beautiful Kimono lady (lying down) plus, out back, a life model. I chose the violinist for two reasons: her gorgeous ultramarine blue, linen dress and the fact that she was moving all over the place. Even when she sat down, she didn't sit still! A couple of people told me they found this difficult, of course but to me it was an amusing challenge.

Something occurred to me on the way home: whenever in the past I've attended such events, I've sat an drawn (or painted) one or two pieces of art and returned another day to view the exhibition. This year, in the three hours, I did four sketches (three figure and one still life) then walked round and viewed the whole exhibition before going home. This is surely thanks to sketchcrawling with Urban Sketchers. On a sketch crawl, especially the London ones, there are people flying back and forth in front of us and so much to capture that we are forced to work rapidly. Add into the mix the fact that at 1:30pm and again at 4:00pm, we reconnect and photograph our artwork so there is a constant subliminal countdown to finish something and appear with your artwork in the group photo! However, sketchcrawls are so much fun that we are not stressed! What this amounts to is that, personally, I've become quicker and more decisive - who knew?!

So, thank you 'Urban Sketchers London' and 'Drawing Outside Northampton' - your training has been and continues to be priceless!

Our model (Anna, I think) took a break and sat down before walking around looking at everyone's sketches.  Even as she sat, she was wriggling about so much that it was a job to even capture the violin. Had I thought of it, I'd have sketched it on both sides of her, rather than waiting for her to revert to one of her many positions. She was fantastic, playing Vivaldi's Four Seasons, amongst other lively pieces, for three hours straight minus two five minute breaks - an amazing young woman!

211. Rachel's Mug

Schmincke soft pastels on Clairefontaine Pastelmat, 12" x 9.5"

Who knew that when I logged out of here on Christmas Day that I wouldn't be back for a month?! So, for the first time in years, I've reached Week 4 and not yet posted in Leslie Saeta's '30 in 30' - gasp!

I hope to be back to frequent posting now and I'm looking forward to being able to revisit and comment on the blogs of those of you who have them.

This morning I was with my friend Rachel who has the loveliest mugs - this one a Cath Kidston. I took my pastels with me and she brought hers down so we had great fun painting them!

I love the vibrancy and immediacy of pastels and the way you can get your hands right in there but I also love oils, acrylics, watercolours, pen and ink, graphite, etc. I love them all for different reasons. Do you have a favourite?

123. Sunshine Bakery in Pastel

Schminke and Unison Soft Pastels over watercolour
on Daler Rowney Murano paper, 12" x 16"

I clean forgot to post up this pastel painting from Roger Dellar's workshop on the 5th. I found this extremely difficult but ultimately very rewarding - the loose effect is so far from my style. I was often concentrating so much on trying to make it more abstract, I forgot to vary my mark-making. It was a great day though and Roger was again generous in sharing his knowledge. Even if I had just watched him paint it would have been enough just to see how he develops his paintings.

Yep! That's a cannon from the war!

121. Kimono in Pastel

Schminke and Unison Soft Pastels on Sennelier Pastelcard, 12" x 15.75"

Last evening, I attended a great event at the Mall Galleries who hosted another  'Art Event Evening' - this time in conjunction with the Pastel Society. I met up with fellow artists whom I've met at workshops. It is always really constructive to paint alongside professional artists/tutors but the highlight for me was meeting up with Eiko Yoshmoto again. Her teaching style and delivery are unique and last night she was, as usual, champing at the bit, ready to impart some of it again with little one-to-one sessions for whoever wanted them.

Eiko giving instructions

What can I say…..? Amazing!
(Eiko used to be a hairdresser and she did this haircut.)

'Toolkit' (including bag of rice to clean pastels)

Breaking off a third of each pastel allowed me to travel with a light box but with over 80 different colours from which to choose.  :)

There was a musician playing various Spanish guitar pieces but I chose to paint 'Kimono'. After I had painted an impressionist version, Eiko got hold of my hand, put the pastel between my fingers, and worked my wrist leaving energetic strokes all over the pastel paper. Wherever she is, people swarm around watching with fascination! So, I cannot take all the credit for this image; after all, I was her puppet but I really love the outcome. We were covered head to toe in pastel but a great time was had by all!

Two others there were Anne from the Big Painting Challenge and Katherine Tyrrell, one of the founders of Urban Sketchers UK, who was promoting her new book. It was interesting talking with each of them. However, whenever I've come across Katherine, she's left me with a wealth of new sketching information; like most artists, she is super keen to share her extensive knowledge of locations, sketchbooks, pens, poses, etc, etc.

118. Parrottee in Pastel

Schminke soft pastels on Clairefontaine Pastelmat Paper,  9.5" x 12"
(Reworked)
Here it is; I've added a ton of colour into the water and also to some of the sky which extends into the trees. I just needed some warmth and colour to eliminate the grey here in 'Blighty'. I have to say though, after such a dreary day yesterday, the sun came out today and it has made such a difference! Anyway, what do you think?

I may well add more colour to the dark passages of water - same tones but more colour. Watch this space.

110. After Paul Cezanne: The Blue Vase (1883-87)

(After Cezanne)
Unison Pastels on Clairefontaine Pastelmat, 8" x 8"

Hi Folks. Hope you are enjoying creating; I'm really impressed with all the artwork submitted to Leslie's challenge. I am also really grateful to you all for visiting my blog and leaving lovely comments - I find I'm thinking of you all when I'm painting/drawing and that's so inspiring - many thanks!

Today, I thought I'd go for something really lively. I'm constantly amazed that Cezanne was clever enough to create such busy paintings (in every sense) yet achieve such harmony! I've altered the colours slightly and also pushed together some of the elements; I hope I haven't gone too far! Have fun!

87. Gallery Sketches: J M W Turner

(After J M W Turner.)
Conte and wax crayons on black pastel paper, A4

Above is a (wonky) photocopy of
Margate(?) by the Sea by J M W Turner
and beneath it is my 5 minute sketch of the piece, Mars Lumograph 100.

Our instructions in this instance were to take the three colours given to us and use tone to re-create Turner's painting retaining the black of the paper for the darkest tone. The colours were sanguine and white Conte crayons and a yellow ochre wax crayon. It was impossible to work over the wax crayon so I just used it for the foreground grasses and blended the sky using the sanguine - hence the redness.

Can I see a smiley face on the page?

At the end of the session, we were asked to do another sketch of the painting but this time we only had five minutes so I opened my sketchbook and did it with a pencil (can't remember which grade).

16. Blue Abstract

Digital Painting on iPad using the iPastels app.

I've been fiddling about with this but decided to finish it today. :)

15. The 'S' Word

Digital iPad painting using the Procreate app (pastel brush).

"Just as rain and snow descend from the skies and don't go back until they've watered the earth, doing their work of making things grow and blossom, producing seed for the farmers and food for the hungry..."  (The Message Bible.)

It's difficult to switch on the TV these days and not hear of the damage being done by snow.  Now that it has melted, there is the awful threat of flooding.  Even though I fell quite badly on the snow and ice a week or so ago, I wanted to do something positive relating to snow.

I have a 'day job' so it is not possible to spend hours painting which is why many of these are done quickly on my iPad - it cannot compare to the lovely feel and texture of paint but I really appreciate having it.  Well done to all you who have worked so hard keeping up with the 30x30 challenge and many thanks to Leslie Saeta.
